Red Alder

The most common native hardwood in the Pacific Northwest, recognized as a fast-growing pioneer species that thrives in moist, disturbed soils. Growing up to 60 feet, it is distinguished by its mottled, ashy-gray bark, wavy-edged leaves with curled-under margins, and ability to fix nitrogen to improve soil.
